The Reiki Television Project

FOR YEARS I lived alone and chose not to have a television. Now I live in a household with a television. Its very presence begs me to turn it on and watch it, of course — and many times I do. Sometimes I watch it because I want to see what's happening in the outside world and the mass consciousness. Other times, just to give me a break from working; it occupies my attention in a dreamy, thoughtless, meditative way. Of course, the purveyors of TV programming use precisely that attribute of it to program the viewers. Television is the most effective method of mass hypnosis ever invented.

I've wondered, for a long time: Is it possible to watch television without being hypnotized by it? I believe it is — and that we can even have a good effect on the people and situations we see there.

When I'm away from television, I love not hearing or seeing anything about the "news." But, when television is around, the "news" and political shows are mostly what I watch. Some people like to scare themselves with horror movies; I guess I get a similar effect with "news" and "politics." : ^ ) The "news" is always full of potentially scary things, and the "politics" is like watching All-Star Wrestling.

At some point I realized I was being drawn to these things with the same kind of fascination that compels people to watch a train wreck (and almost every aspect of modern society can fairly be characterized nowadays as a train-wreck-in-progress). But then I began to feel that, instead of being hypnotized by the train wreck, I could actually apply some beneficial energy to it. I started giving Reiki to the people on the TV screen....

Don't we need to ask their permission?

In a word ... No. Not if we are truly "doing" Reiki. Reiki does nothing but coordinate the other energies in the body and connect us to our real Self and our Source. As Hiroshi Doi says, "Reiki is wave of love!" It brings out the divinity and the truth of us — which can be nothing but good! (The only way we can screw it up is by involving our personal will, trying to achieve a chosen result.) If we truly "do" just Reiki, we can do no harm. Reiki brings out the truth and the real Self — and each person either allows that to happen or not. It cannot be forced on anyone.

Please join the project!

If you're a Reiki person, please consider directing Reiki to the people who appear on your TV screen (especially the politicians and anyone influential)! As you watch them, just imagine and feel your hands touching their hearts, activating the reiki there — which brings in the Source-energy, to manifest more of the real Self.

If you're not a Reiki person, you can have a similar effect anyway. You can use whatever method of prayer is natural to you (Reiki is really just a specific method of prayer) — with the intent of merely opening the person's heart, letting in the light of Truth, manifesting the true Self.

It's crucial that we not try to influence anyone in a particular direction. We must always be careful not to impose our will on others. In using Reiki or any other genuine form of prayer, our sole intent is to open the doorway to the Source and the true Self. We desire only to bring out the Truth in everyone; and each person is free to accept or reject our prayers.

All is One, All is God/Self

One of the things we like so much about Reiki is that, when we give Reiki, we simultaneously receive it. In fact, it's less a matter of "giving" or "receiving" ... and more that we are simply being in a state of Reiki. Our energetic condition — determined by our feelings, thoughts, words, and actions — affects not only us but everything. And we come to realize our oneness with all beings.

The next time you find yourself watching TV and feeling upset by what's being said, or by the person saying it — remind yourself that everyone is a manifestation of the One Source, and focus on being Reiki. Feel your oneness with that person, at a level deeper than the words he or she is saying. Feel the fundamental God-ness of the person, and let the Reiki bring it out. You'll be helping that person, and yourself, and all the rest of us! Your realization of your oneness (and God-ness!) with another person puts you immediately at peace, and keeps you from being angry at what the person is saying.

Try it — you may be surprised at how well it works! When we're being Reiki, it's impossible to be angry! And, of course, this applies not only to watching television, but to every moment of life.
